Difference between PMBOK & PRINCE2


Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) Guide is the standard brought out by the PMI, USA for management of individual projects.
Projects IN a Controlled Environment (PRINCE2) is a structured method for effective project management, which is being continued to be developed by the Office of Government Commerce (OGC), UK.


PMBOK is a standard and internationally recognized standard (IEEE Std 1490-2003) that provides the
fundamentals of project management.
PRINCE2 (PRojects IN Controlled Environments) is a structured method for effective project management. It is a standard used management as they apply to a wide range of projects, including construction, software, engineering, automotive, etc.

PMBOK is a knowledge based approach to project management.
PRINCE2 is a process base project management methodology.


PMBOK is descriptive in explaining project management techniques.
PRINCE2 is perspective in explaining how project management techniques should be structured and applied.

PMBOK describes core practices and a wider range of techniques that can be applied to manage a project.
PRINCE2 is a series of management processed defining what must be done, when an how it must be done and by whom over the life of a project.


PMBOK guide is a process based, describes work as being accomplished by processes.
PRINCE2 is product based; focus on successful deliveries of projects rather than on the activities of the project.

In PMBOK a project is a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result.
In PRINCE2 a project is a management environment that is created for the purpose of delivering one or more business products according to a specified business case.

In PMBOK the project manager is the person responsible for accomplishing the project objectives.
IN PRINCE2 the project manager is given the authority to run the project on a day-to-day basis.

PMBOK is non-prescriptive
PRINCE2 is prescriptive

PMBOK focuses on the project manager’s role
PRINCE 2 defines the roles of everyone involved in a project.

PMBOK training organizations must comply with the PMI training syllabus.
PRINCE2 training organizations must be accredited and hold a UK Government license to train in PRINCE2.

PMBOK is a collection of knowledge areas it requires a team with management experience to design a method to support its application.
PRINCE2 is a process based methodology the project team does not need to be highly experienced to apply.

PMBOK guide is a highly descriptive compendium of the PM Processes and Tools.
PRINCE2 takes a prescriptive approach for project management, complete with templates, roles and responsibilities of multiple stakeholders.

PMBOK guide defines the collection of knowledge generally recognized as best practices for managing projects.
PRINCE2 is a process driven method, which describes what the project manager and other major stakeholders to do in projects.
